Insights
After gathering impressions on our concepts for how the Migrant Leaders app could work, we noticed some key themes in the feedback.
1
Profile Information
Participants expected to be able to add things like personal interests, name pronunciation, and communication preferences to their profile.
2
Intro Videos
We presented an idea where users can film an introduction video of themselves to display on their profile in the app. Most said they would not feel comfortable with this.
3
Terminology
Participants often got confused with terminology such as matches and connections.
4
Compatibility
We presented an idea about showing compatibility value to help decide on a connection. This was well received but many wanted more information about how that would work.
I created a new design system that aligned with the existing Migrant Leaders brand guidelines, and also addressed many WCAG AA criteria. I also took care to ensure the system was robust and scalable for future updates.
When crafting the onboarding experience, it was important to establish the brand identity and quickly situate users in the task of entering their information.
Onboarding screens - mentor perspective
To improve the experience of users finding a good mentorship match, we implemented a compatibility system that involves users choosing their top 3 areas of expertise as well as sector experience and other skills.
With an app solution, mentors on the Migrant Leaders programme are now able to see a lot more information about potential mentees at a glance without having to communicate with Migrant Leaders.
Suggested Mentees
Mentors have a Browse tab where they get served the most compatible mentees to connect with first.
Compatibility
Percentage compatibility with each mentee is shown on profile cards to save mentors time in finding a suitable connection.
Shortlisting
Mentors can also add any profiles they see in the Browse tab to a shortlist that they can easily access later.
Mentors can now find an connect with an appropriate mentee with less intervention from Migrant Leaders.

To provide a better experience for the client to manage mentor and mentee users, I designed a simple front end experience leveraging material UI.
After the app was launched in Q2 of 2024, all of the users that were already with the Migrant Leaders programme were onboarded. Since then, the amount of mentors and mentees in the programme has more than doubled.
